Choosing Policy Priorities: Growth vs. Equality

November 20, 2007

Human security students: Dani Rodrik offers an economist’s perspective on the need for poor countries to focus on clear growth strategies, even if they may lead to short term inequalities, in order to achieve long term social policy objectives. Not everyone agreed. What do you think?

UPDATE: Apparently some of the most vigorous disagreement to Rodrik’s proposals came from a Zambian NGO. Rodrik defends his position here. Are you persuaded now?

P.S. — For those of you who need a refresher on what “real exchange rates” mean, I found this backgrounder by the IMF helpful.
